Siyam (Fasting) and Ramadan
Islamic articles on Siyam (fasting) and Ramadan: its virtue, reward and fiqh (jurisprudence). Siyam (fasting) is an important ritual of Islamic worship (ibadah). Ramadan is a special month of Islamic calendar in which the Qur'an was revealed to humanity for guidance. Muslims observe obligatory fasts every year during the blessed month of Ramadan. Allah says in the Qur'an: "O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious)...the month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong)" [Surah Al-Baqarah(2): 183-185 - interpretation of the meaning]. Therefore, Allah highlights the purpose of fasting, achieving piety, and revelation of the Qur'an during this month.
