Default Aceh passes adultery stoning law

Indonesia's province of Aceh has passed a new law making adultery punishable by stoning to death, a member of the province's parliament has said.

The law was passed unanimously by Aceh's regional legislature, said assembly member Bahrom Rasjid. Opponents had tried to delay the law, saying more debate was needed because it imposes capital punishment.

Sharia law was partially introduced in Aceh in 2001, as part of a government offer to pacify separatist rebels.

A peace deal in 2005 ended the 30-year separatist insurgency, and many of the former rebels have now entered Aceh's government. "This law will be effective in 30 days with or without the approval of Aceh's governor," said Bahrom Rasjid.

The governor of Aceh, a former rebel with the Free Aceh Movement, is opposed to strict Sharia law. He had urged more debate over the bill. Married people convicted of adultery can be sentenced to death by stoning. Unmarried people can be sentenced to 100 lashes with a cane. The law also imposes severe sentences for rape, homosexuality, alcohol consumption and gambling.

salam

I don't understand one thing. Why is it that those who are usually campaigning for greater shariah law to be adopted always concentrate on punishment laws for adultery etc. I don't hear too many such persons arguing against riba as their political platform. It's always something to do with killing someone, or cutting off people's hands etc.

but as you said, It's still good as long as the proper safeguards against misuse are in place.

^sister, the west does not have problem with Muslim countries in general. They have problem with Islam and as long as Islam is followed and the Shari'ah is implemented they will always make a big fuss about it.

@salamfromrom

akhee, because hadoud are more related to general masses and require first to set thing sup in the society. The issues like interest banks are contemporary issues and obviously they are equally important; however, at least in Muslim countries, they are not much related to general mass because people can avoid and there is no hadd on consuming riba'a. Nick name of Aceh is 'Serambi Mekah' (Makah terrace) because this is a place of religious Muslim people.

However, the last and only stoning to death punishment in Indonesia was happened not in Aceh but in Ambon, in 2001 during Muslim-Christian conflict.
One Mujahid from 'Laskar Jihad' raped a Christian woman. Then the 'Laskar Jihad' leader ustadz Ja'far Umar Talib gave him stoning to death punishment on public area. It became a controversial law case in Indonesia. After the conflict has over, police arrested ustadz Ja'far Umar Talib. But not so long police released him. Now ustadz Ja'far Umar Talib is free and the case has closed.
