| ^lol, subhaanAllah, we got a linux fanboy on board. akhee, do you really use linux? actually, I never liked windows from the beginning, but I couldn't switch to mac due to fact that mac wasn't using x86 technology and such. However, they have improved quite a lot in past couple of years and now it's about time for me to give it a try. Macbook is expensive in comparison to windows, but at least I won't have to put up Vista garbage. And window 7 is pretty much copy of Mac

| @Abdul-Fattah: LOL, a linux fanboy! I couldn't imagine using linux! I think its because since the beginning I have the perception of Linux as being something totally incomplete and for nerds though I never saw it! What is your view re Linux? @Salman: What is x86 technology? And before apple started using Intel chips was it making its own chips or using of some other manufacturer ?

And Linux has become practically out-of-the-box. Meaning you can pretty much install it, and most hardware is recognized without you having to configure and stuff. The only major downside peolpe might find in linux, is that some game are made for windows only, some games are made for windows and mac. But almost no games are made for linux (except some open-source-projects). You can still run most of them trough an emulator, but that's a little tricky for newcomers. So the gamercommunity is somewhat reluctant to jump on the linuxbandwagon because of that. Other then that, linux is ready for the general public. As for me personally, I wouldn't change back for windows even if they'd pay me for it. Unless of cuorse, a really general offer, in which case I might consider a dual boot, but would probably still run linux then all the time :p

| Walikum salam Do you mean that I can run 2 Operating systems on my laptop? Linux using the CD as a Linux boot? If its that what you mean, than should I download linux and do as you say without risking my laptop data?

Another solution if you're not sure, if your HD has partitions, of which one is big and empty, you could make a "dual-boot". (this has to be on the master HD). This means that two different operatingsystems are installed on your HD (each in his own partition). Upon starting up, you will be asked which OS you want to run (windows or linux disto). This is what I did first when I took the step to linux. Then after a month or so, when I was confident and sure linux was the thing for me, I formatted my HD, and made a linux-only install. Here are some guides: How to dual boot Windows Vista and Linux How to dual boot Windows XP and Linux (XP installed first) -- the step-by-step guide with screenshots How to dual-boot Vista with Linux (Vista installed first) -- the step-by-step guide with screenshots
