Default teachers and students

from an islamic point of view:
  • what is the adaab a teacher should have towards the student?
  • if the teacher is being too harsh/rude with the student, how should that be dealt with?
  • what (manners) should the teachers expect from students?
  • how should a teacher deal with students who dont look very interested in learning, are rude, etc?
  • what are the aadaab the student must have with the teacher?

Asalaamu alaykum waRahmatullah waBarakaatuh

The general rule if we study the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is that he was the teacher, and his companions were his students.

We notice a common trend in that;

The Teacher has to be extremely kind and gentle, as God says to Prophet Muhammad (and any leader in general):

So by mercy from Allah , [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you.
So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah . Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

[Quran aal Imraan 3:159]

This is the general case in a classroom.

However, the students who are bad or misbehave - then they can be disciplined, through a method which he feels will be of benefit. And this disciplining should be intended for benefit, not for 'relieving frustration'.

So the teacher may send the child out of class, make him 'stand in a corner', make other students not talk to him for a temporary time period etc. This might encourage the student to be good again and be serious in his studies.

In regards to the students respecting the teacher, then no doubt - the companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) treated him with Extreme respect, and were silent during the times he was teaching.

Yet he was a good teacher in that he would ask Questions to his students, they would respond, and then he would then tell them the correct answer.

So we see a good relationship with a student and a teacher, almost like a fatherly figure in the classroom. Yet when the child acts bad purposelly, he is disciplined. If the child makes mistakes, the teacher is to remain patient with him. And if the child does good - he is to be rewarded.

All this is through what we see in the example of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him.)
