Default Obligatory knowledge for all to seek.

I know how confusing and mixed up things can get for people such as myself. You have so many things to learn that you don't know where to start, to the point that you give up. Since I was going to share this with one of the sisters, I decided to paste it for us laypeople :)

The following I'll paste from another forum . I hope that isn't a bother.

Seeking knowledge starts with learning those affairs that are obligatory upon every Muslim to know (whether one is fluent in arabic or not), and that is having correct knowledge of your Lord, and how to worship Him correctly, and having correct knowledge about the Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, and how to follow him, and how to act upon the religion of Islaam.

Because when you die, it is about these three affairs that you will be questioned about in the grave (Who is your Lord, the one you worshiped? What is your Religion? What do you say about Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, who was sent to you?). And if you pass the trial of the grave successfully, then inshaa-Allaah, what follows in the next life will be good. And if you fail the trial of the grave, then what follows will not be easy.

And one cannot pass the heavy trial of the grave without seeking knowledge and then acting upon it.

So in this regard, I recommend to get a copy of the book:

Explanation of the Three Fundamental Principles of Islaam
Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Saalih al-'Uthaymeen
http://www.**********/store/product.p...5&cat=0&page=1

Because the book, which is an explanation of a work by Shaykhul-Islaam Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhaab, was actually written to address the three questions of the grave. And thusly, the book was intended to cover the obligatory affairs that no Muslim is excused from knowing and acting upon.

From the benefits of the book mentioned is that there is a clear explanation of the difference between Tawheed and Shirk, the meaning of worship and its proofs in the Qur'aan and Sunnah, the various types of worship and levels of faith, how to correctly understand the Names and Attributes of Allaah, a brief biography of the life of Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, and many other issues that will benefit a Muslim in this life and the next by Allaah's permission.

Corresponding with this book, there is an excellent lecture series by Dr. Saleh as-Saleh, rahimahullaah, on the Explanation of the Three Fundamental Principles of Islaam. So it is possible to have a copy of the book and listen to his lecture series simultaneously.

In fact, it is The Three Fundamental Principles that is recommended by the ulema to be amongst the first books studied by students of knowledge.

The lecture series is available (for free) at:
