| I felt compelled to share this Hadeeth with yourselves.. Although we do not find it in the major works, our Ustads? and Shuyookh are of the consensus that such traditions can be used for Naseehah purposes. Imam Ghazali quotes this Jami? (comprehensive) Hadeeth in his work ?Bidayatul Hidayah? (and in his Ihya? aswell I thinks).. I?ll try to translate (with help from Shaikh Abdurrahman) as best as possible. ?Abdullah ibn Mubarak has related with his chain from a person who says, that he asked Mu?adh ibn Jabal (ra), ?Relate to me a Hadeeth which you have heard from the Prophet (saw).? Mu?adh began to cry until I thought he wasn?t going to stop. After eventually stopping, Mu?adh said, ?I have heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say, ?Oh Mu?adh, I am going to relate something to you, which if you preserve, will benefit you. However, if you do not preserve it and let it go to waste, you will have no plee of defence for yousrelf on the Day of Judgement. Oh Mu?adh.. Allah (swt) has created seven Angels before creating the heavens and the earth. Then he created the Heavens, and for every layer of Heaven, he put a Guardian Angel as a doorperson/guard/keeper for each of them. The Angels ascend with a servants work from morning to evening; the work has a light like the light of the Sun. When the Angels reach the first heaven, the actions are increased and multiplied. The Guardian of the first heaven says, ?With this work, strike the face of the do?er of it. I am in charge of backbiting. My Lord has commanded me not to allow the work of anyone guilty of backbiting to pass by me.? Then the Angels take the pious actions of a servant and they are multiplied, purified and increased until it reaches the second heaven. The keeper of the second heaven says, ?Stop! And strike the face of the person who did this action. I am the Angel of Fakhr (boasting, ostentatious). This person had intended by this action to gain a possesion of the world. My Lord has commanded me that I do not leave any action to go beyond me that is of this nature. This person used to act in a boastful manner over others in their gatherings.? Then the Angels take the pious actions of another servant which are full of light because of the charity, fasting and prayer that were part of it, even impressing the Angels. When they reach the third heaven, the Guardian in charge says, ?Stop! And strike the face of the person who did this action. I am the Angel of Kibr (haughtiness, pride and arrogance, thinking yourself to be better than others). My Lord has commanded me that I cannot let any actions of this nature pass because this person used to act arrogantly over and above others in their gatherings.? Then the Angels take the actions of another servant, shining brightly like the stars because of the tasbeeh, prayers, fasts and bigger and lesser pilgrimages, until it reaches the fourth heaven. The Guardian that is responsible there says, ?Stop! And strike the face of the person who did this action, and his back and stomach. I am Angel incharge of ?Ujb (conceit). My Lord has commanded me that I do not let any actions of this nature pass because this person would add into self-conceit (thinking himself to be very worthy, great and glorious).? Then the Angels take the actions of another servant, and these actions are like a bride as if she is being conducted to her husband (adorned), until they reach the fifth heaven. The Guardian that is responsible says, ?Stop! And strike the face of the person who did this action, and his back and stomach, and hang it around his neck. I am Angel incharge of Hasad (jealousy or envy). This person was jealous of others who did similar actions as him and all those who were superior to him, and would slander them. My Lord has commanded me not to let such actions pass by me.? Then the Angels take the actions of another servant, consisting of prayers, charity, greater and lesser pilgrimage and fasts, ascending towards the sixth sky. The Guardian responsible says, ?Stop! And strike the face of the person who did this action, for the do?er of this action would never have mercy on others from the servants of Allah. He would not only cause them grief, and harm and distress them, but would rejoice at it. I am the Angel of Mercy. My Lord has commanded me not to allow any action of this nature pass by.? Then the Angels ascend with the actions of another servant, consisting of fasts, prayers, charity (in good causes and Zakat), and his Jihad and continence, it had a sound like the sound of bees, and radiance like the sun. Along with it ascend 3000 angels and they pass the seventh heaven. The Guarding responsible says to them, ?Stop! And strike the face of the person who did this action, and his limbs, and lock up his heart. I veil from my Lord every work that is not done for the sake of Him (swt). This work was done for something other than Allah Most High, it was done for honour amongst the scholars, and position amongst the intellectuals, and renown amongst the cities. My Lord has commanded me not to allow his work to pass beyond me. Every work not done purely for Allah is Riya? (showing off) and Allah does not receive the work of the Mura?ie (the one who shows off).? The Angels then ascend with the works of a servant, consisting of prayers, charity (in good causes and Zakat), fasts, greater and lesser pilgrimages, a good character, observances of silence and recollection and remember of Allah (swt), and it is accompanied by the Angels of the seven heavens, until they pass through all the veils, to the presense of Allah, Most High. They stand before Him and bear witness to Him of the good work performed solely for the sake of Allah, Most High. Allah (swt) says. ?You are the Guardians over the work of my servant, but I am the watcher over his heart. This act was not done for My Sake, but for the sake of something else, so My Curse be upon him!? The Angels say, ?Your Curse, and our curse be upon him,? and the seven heavens and those in them will curse that person. Mu?adh wept, and then asked, ?Oh Rasulullah! You are the Messenger of Allah (saw) and I am only Mu?adh, how is it that I can be delivered from this problem, how can I gain salvation?? ? Rasulullah (saw) replied, ?Follow my example Oh Mu?adh, even if you fall short somewhat in what you do. Guard your tongue from slandering your brothers, do not exalt yourself above them, and do not show-off with your actions, do not mingle the work of this world with the world to come, do not act arrogantly in society so that people avoid you because of your bad character, do not whisper to one man whilst another is present, do not magnify your importance above others so that you lose the good things of this world and the world to come, to not tear to pieces peoples? character so that on the Day of Resurrection, the dogs of hell tear you to pieces. Allah (swt) says, ?By those who draw forth?? Do you know who those are?? They are the dogs of hell drawing the flesh from the bones. Mu?adh said, ?Oh Messenger of Allah (saw), who is able to acquire these good qualities, and who will escape from these dogs?? Rasulullah (saw) replied, ? Oh Mu?adh, It is indeed easy for him, for whom Allah (swt) makes it easy.? (Similar to part of the reply which Rasulullah gave when Mu?adh (ra) asked Rasulullah a question. Narrated in Sunan at-Tirmidhi. Imam Nawawi quotes it in his Arba?een, Hadeeth 29) The narrator says, ?I have not seen anybody who more abundantly recites the Qur?an than Mu?adh.? Imam Ghazali finishes by saying, ?Reflect on this Hadeeth, Oh One who wants to seek knowledge.? |
