Should We Excuse One Another On Matters Wherein We Differ?

By Ibn Uthaymeen

QUESTION:

What is your view regarding the statement of some, “We unite in issues that we agree upon, and we excuse one another in matters we disagree about”?

ANSWER:

This statement is too general in its implications:

- Its first part – “We unite in issues that we agree upon” – is the truth

- Its second part – “We excuse one another in matters we disagree about” – requires a more detailed explanation.

If difference of opinion on an issue is based upon valid ijtihaad, then yes, we should excuse one another, and moreover, our hearts should not differ. But if ijtihaad is not valid (when the ruling in a matter is clearly expressed in the sharee’ah), then we do not excuse those who oppose the truth; rather, we must make it clear to them that they must submit to the truth.

And if they don't?

The above statement could lead one to assume the sheikh is using veiled-threats against those who do not share what he considers to be the right opinions.

no, the shaykh is implying here that once people have been given the proofs and it has been established against them and they still reject them, then from a social standpoint, we abandon them and disassociate from them and we make clear to all the deviance or partisanship of such people in order for the general people not to be misguided by them. That is the meaning that our Shaykh Uthaymeen is talking about.

the issue of "threat" can only be usurped by the Amir himself (those in charge) AND it has to be something which is at least a bida that is heresy or a bida that entails kufr.

so that was the wrong perception you got from Ibn Uthaymeen rahimahullah

asalamu alaikum
