See there's this guy that keeps bugging me about how Islam is so intolerant and that Muslims too are intolerant because of Islam,

He doesn't like the way we treat women and says that Muslims treat women like crap and kill them through honour killings and so on.. he doesn't listen to me when I tell him that most Muslim reverts are Women and that the Qur'an mentions women alongside men and doesn't treat them unfairly, but he still follows the stereotypes and goes on to talk about how oppressed Muslim women are =| I think he gets his knowledge from the media or some unknown place from outer space,

Please tell me what I can do to make him understand.

The fact is that what he describes does happen and cannot be denied. You must therefore show that you are aware of that but demonstrate it is not the Islamic way and is not as common as the Media suggest. If you deny it then you are the one getting knowledge from outer space and he will say you are simply not facing up to the real world.

If he doesn't hear you out, and doesn't want to - then thats his problem.


Also ask him, "do i know more about my religion, or do you?" then quote him verses from qur'an or ahadith which refute his claims.

akhee, that not correct approach. Just because he is a non-Muslims doesn't necessarily qualify him as less knowledgeable. You can't just state that, you have demonstrate that he is less knowledgeable.

1 - sister, if it is a forum, let the brothers there deal with stubborns like him.
2 - your job is to convey the message and NOT making sure whether people understand it or not
3 - there is no point of wasting time and arguing with these kinds of people in fiqhi issues; you got to attack their methodology and invest your time on that topic
4 - Like Mr. Silver mentioned, you have to tackle the issue directly by telling him that it is not part of Islam.

You must first accept that Muslims are intolerant. Than ask him to provide few examples with authentic and verifiable evidence.

When he will present you the evidence, which we all know would be few criminal cases here and there, you should than ask him to compare this with the rights of woman in Islam. Dont tell him to go and compare him yourself. You must find relevant hadiths or Ayahs (there are some good information available on the forum). You should than tell him the variance between these criminal acts and the Islamic rights. That is all what you should do.

If he insist on believing that all those criminal stuff really belong to Islam than you should wish him to get well soon and bid farewell or If you would like to argue a bit just for the sake of argument and he is a Christian than google up some criminal acts in West (There would be at least trillions) and tell him that Christianity is really all about evil.

I pray to Allah to bestow on you knowledge which will help you serve in His Cause.

This starts off quite well but misses the point a bit, Islam might in theory be tolerant but what about practice? I can give you dozens of examples and the site Islam: Making a True Difference in the World can give you thousands and you can google up many more yourself. If you simply shut your mind to that and use the frankly silly argument that 'if its bad it cannot be Islam' then you turn your back on a serious issue, convincing yourself that it does not exist and thereby condoning evil.

The all embracing claim that Christianity is all about evil is a monstrous lie, Jesus is at the centre of Christianity so according to you He is all about evil so you condemn what the Qu'ran commends.

The fact that I google up some criminal acts and say that this is in practice of Islam is the outcome of a closed mind.

Everyone knows that Christian dominated countries are biggest terrorists,they had World Wars and used atomic explosions against the Japanese which changed their entire world, they murder innocent people in Afghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam, Pakistan, Israel (Christians best allies). The western societies are extremely unmoral, have the highest rape rates, suicide rates, criminal rates and just everything. All this is practical and therefore according to your argument, every evil thing is endorsed by Christianity.

Let us be clear here, are you saying that no atrocities, rapes, murder war etc etc were ever committed in the name of Islam by Muslims. Is that your stated position? Once I hear your answer we can carry on.

No. This is what I am saying, this is perhaps what you want to belief. What I am saying is that the criminal or evil acts happen doesnt represents Islam or Muslims. As the popular saying goes:

"Terrorists have no religion" --- If someone murder someone than that doesnt mean that what Islam tells them to do.
